Life, or something like it…

So this is what life is like when you don’t have a full time job. I only worked full time for 3.5 years… but before that I was taking care of babies. I had a baby every 2.5 years 3 times. So I was constantly busy and knee-deep in babies, diapers, breastfeeding, etc. I went straight from that to a full time job. So I really don’t know what it’s like to not work full time doing something that involved a lot of work. Now that my youngest is six years old, it’s weird to figure out what to do with my days. There’s no diapers, no breastfeeding, not as much laundry, and they are all old enough to entertain themselves and even fend for themselves at breakfast/lunch. (And with me working full time from home, they got used to doing so.) My oldest can even do his own laundry.

I’ve been keeping busy, but it’s not the “I have accomplished something today!” busy I’m used to. It’s laundry (but I already did that before..) it’s dinner on the table every night (that was much more challenging before so I suppose that is an accomplishment — speaking of dinner, it’s amazing how much easier it is to come up with something different every night when you don’t have a full time job. I have time to *think* about it!) it’s keeping the house clean, (another challenge but not unheard of when I was working), it’s never running out of groceries (since I can go get whatever we need at any time now) and.. well, that’s about it. I have thought about taking up a hobby, or reading all the Harry Potter books (I’ve only read the first one) but …. meh.

BTW, not doing a whole lot with my days outside cleaning, laundry, cooking, and grocery shopping makes for boring blogging! Back when I was working, I could have filled this blog with entries about the daily happenings of my life, but I never felt comfortable doing so. A lot of it involved the crazy customers at work and I felt like I should not post on a personal (but public) blog about what went on at work.

This not-knowing-what-to-do is only going to get worse when the kids go back to school! Cody has been in Summer school since the 5th but that ends tomorrow. I will look forward to the extra time with the kids next week and the remainder of the summer. I have a few things planned that should be fun for us. But until then (which is technically only one more day) I’m chewing on nails trying to figure out WTH to do (besides laundry, cleaning, grocery shopping, and cooking).

There’s also the internal struggle that’s going on with me …. Read more

Weekends (and Chihuahuas) Rule

I had the most awesome weekend. No stress, no worries about jobs, just good ole’ quality time with my family. Casey also celebrated his 9th birthday so there was major birthday-boy partying going on!

Friday I got to talk to my best bud at my old job. He’s doing so well and I was so glad to hear it. This is someone I talked to every day for 3.5 years! We got close enough that we got on each others nerves sometimes, heh. But I’ve missed the daily interaction with him and it was good to talk to him on Friday and hear how much more relaxed and happy he sounds. Losing the job was a blessing in disguise for him and I’m thrilled for him. I’m still waiting to find the blessing for me. I know it’s there and I’m coming around. And for the most part I’m doing great. I just have these little lost moments where I get almost panicky that I need … must be working! *breathes*

One bright side: My house is always clean, laundry is almost always caught up, and I have more time to read blogs, forums, and even the news. Today I read this article, Tiny Dog Saves Baby From Rattlesnake and it cracked me up. (How scary, though!) I knew there was a reason I liked Chihuahuas!

Ice Cream and Cars

Last week Cody and I met Jack and his co-workers for lunch at a Chinese restaurant. Cody was fascinated with the chopsticks and kept trying to eat with them. Unfortunately he sat by me. And I’ve never been successful mastering the art of eating with two small sticks. So I was no help.

For dessert he got a bowl of ice cream. He picked up the chopsticks and proceeded to eat his ice cream by dipping the sticks into it. One of Jack’s co-workers was amused at this and told Cody if he could eat his whole bowl of ice cream with chopsticks, he’d give him $5. Cody, not about to turn down the chance at earning money for doing silly things, proceeded to dip his chopsticks into his ice cream faster. He also figured out how to put the bowl up to his mouth and scoop the ice cream into his mouth. The co-worker said that was cheating. I told him no way. He didn’t specify any rules other than eating his ice cream with chopsticks. Another co-worker threw a dollar into the pot so now Cody could earn $6 for finishing all his ice cream with only chopsticks. Cody won.

Here’s a video of him eating it towards the end and being silly. It was taken with a cell phone video camera. The format is 3G2. QuickTime should play it.

Lockdown at Summer School

Yesterday Jack was telling me that while his buddy at work was fixing something in the ER, there was a police officer there who had just been shot. That he heard through the buzz in the ER that there was a hostage situation and schools that were open for summer school were in lock down status. My youngest is in Summer School! Sure enough, when I picked Cody up from the transport area (they are transported by bus from the school up the road to the summer school location) he had a note for me from his teachers to explain that they went into lock down. (Lock down means they lock themselves inside the school and don’t come out or let anyone in till they get an all clear.)

I then looked up online to see the news of what was going on and all local stations and newspapers had a story. You can read about it here: Hostage crisis ends with surrender

It’s not often this kind of craziness happens in our little city here in “The ‘Couve”. It happens all the time across the river in Portland. I found it interesting (and somewhat scary) they had to call in the Portland SWAT team. Portland police are notorious for being trigger happy.

Fortunately the two injured should be OK and the kids who were at school during the lock down seem oblivious. At least mine does. It just meant he couldn’t go outside for recess and he was inconvenienced by that. :) I feel bad for the families who had to be evacuated from their homes. I also feel really bad for the family members involved in this ordeal.

From what the articles say, the guy who they were after simply didn’t want to go back to prison because of a bad experience. Well? How about you stop doing illegal crap to land yourself there.. Dumbass.

Ouch!

I am so sore after this weekend and the first part of the week. We spent most of our weekend getting yard work done. Weeding, trimming, pruning, etc. I woke up Sunday to aching muscles I didn’t even know I had! Then Monday and Tuesday was spend catching up on all the laundry. I kept myself busy cleaning out closets, washing all our extra blankets, vacuuming, organizing, etc. Now my house looks great and I’ve got nothing to do. Well, that’s not entirely true. I always have *something* to do, but the major stuff is all done. Not working is great for my house! :)
