Signed, Sealed, Delivered…

It’s ours!

We signed our lives away today on the new house. By this time tomorrow we’ll have the keys and we’ll be able to move in.

Yesterday was an awful, no good, very bad day! We found out at the last minute there would be more out-of-pocket expenses than we had anticipated in order to close. We also found out our rate would be higher than quoted and after all the stress of this, I had a total meltdown. I called Jack sobbing thinking the whole thing would fall through at the last minute. I was also very very angry and I wasn’t sure where to direct it. Was it our fault for not asking the right questions? (We were supposed to be doing this RIGHT this time!!) Or was it the mortgage broker’s fault for not communicating things properly??? It was a bit of both, but primarily it was the mortgage broker…

Her problem is she’s good… She’s very very smart and she knows her stuff. But she didn’t come down to our level. She kept throwing numbers and figures and terms at us that we didn’t know. I felt like we needed to carry a translation book sometimes. So things definitely got lost in translation. She also didn’t provide us with enough documents to support some of the stuff she told us so we didn’t even have a visual. (We didn’t have this problem when bought this house. The mortgage broker broke things down in a way we can understand.) That’s not saying we’re stupid, cause you know we aren’t… but this wasn’t as cut and dried as our first home buying experience. So when it came down to the wire and suddenly we have to fork over x amount of $$ and things were different than we understood, we (well, mostly me) panicked.

We had a conference call with our buyer’s agent and we did have the option to pull out of the deal with the mortgage broker and start over with another one but that would have delayed closing. The buyer’s agent had a talk with the mortgage broker and the mortgage broker was very open to listen to our concerns and do what she could to make it right. So we contacted her and got everything straightened out. She even cut her fee in half for our trouble (and that saved us a lot, believe me) so it all worked out in the end. She didn’t technically do anything *wrong* or illegal, she assumed we knew more than we did and she assumed we understood everything. We technically thought we did too, lol but we were mistaken. Since we didn’t know we were misunderstanding, we didn’t know we needed clarification. There was also a miscommunication that was not entirely her fault (not ours either) so that didn’t help things. But she did bend over backwards to correct all the mistakes and cutting her fee in half was a huge deal.

So after the awful day that was yesterday, we walked into the Title Company today feeling confident and much better about the whole thing. The docs are all signed and it’s already funded. (There was even a huge gift basket waiting for us from the team our buyer’s agent works through.. the Asivido Team if anyone’s interested). Now we just wait for the county to record it then we are officially homeowners x’s 2!

By the way.. anyone want to rent a house?? ;)

  1. Congratulations!!!
Sarah and her new family will be looking for a new place in a couple of months but your house is big and probably not in their budget.
I don’t know how much help I would be moving boxes but is there anything I can do to help?
    Love you all.

  2. Hey Cathy! :)

    Good to hear from you!

We’re getting some movers to help with the really heavy stuff next weekend. Hopefully this will be an easier move :)
