Blueberries
A couple days ago we checked our blueberry bushes and found them to be filled with ripe blueberries. We picked a huge bowl’s worth and brought them into the house to be washed. We ate a bunch then Casey and I made blueberry cookies. After we were done, it was Melissa’s turn to make blueberry muffins with me. It was a very neat and almost surreal feeling to be making something in my new kitchen out of stuff that grew on the land we now own.
The catch to this story, however, is Jack didn’t get to enjoy this at all.
When everything was all cleaned and put away, I set the cookies and muffins on the kitchen counter wrapped up on plates. While I got busy with stuff around the house, Cody pulled a chair over to the counter, climbed up onto the counter and fed himself and the dog the cookies. Jack came home just in time to see Cody pop the last half of the last cookie into his mouth. Oops. After scolding Cody and the dog and getting them both cleaned up, we showed Jack the blueberry muffins. He ate a small one and said they were wonderful. That should’ve been the end of this happy story, but it’s not.
We planned to eat the muffins for dessert after dinner. Cody is no dummy, so the second he was done with his dinner and we had our backs turned, once again he snuck into the kitchen and up on to the counter and fed himself and the dog the muffins. By now you can imagine just how much the dog loves Cody. We walked in to find him with two muffins left. This time Cody kept himself entertained in between muffins by squirting Dawn dish soap all over the counter. Cody goes in tub, dog goes outside, and two very frustrated parents were happy when the children went to bed that evening.
I ate one of the remaining muffins and saved the biggest one for Jack. After the kids were all tucked in and asleep, Jack poured himself a glass of milk and sat down to eat his muffin. With a smile on his face he took a huge bite and…. swallowed horrified. Then he ran to the bathroom and threw up.
To our horror, Cody had squirted some Dawn dishsoap into that particular muffin. We didn’t notice the blue tinge to it.. well… because it was a BLUEberry muffin. Of course there were blue spots in it and neither of us thought to look closely. After closer inspection of the other half of the muffin, it was literally filled with dishsoap. It took several glasses of water, some milk, a night’s sleep and about halfway through the next day to get the taste of out Jack’s poor mouth.
At least we (including Cody in his own way) had a blast *making* the blueberry treats.

Sounds like it’s time for double height baby gates on the kitchen!
Blech…
